Miami WIOD Radio talk host Jimmy Cefalo shockingly says he has no problem with the word “gay” being used in society, even in a mocking way. Jimmy’s sidekick Manny Munoz stated that he grew up using the word “gay” with his fiends and had no problem in its usage. The comments were made during the station’s daily morning show on October 11th.
CNN’s Anderson Cooper recently took offense to the use of the word “gay” being used in a trailer for the upcoming move, “Dilemma.” Cooper stated the word was “unacceptable because it was hurting kids.” In recent weeks that have been a number of gay hate crimes in the country and a well publicized case of a male college student who was secretly video taped in bed with another man. The videotape was posted online. The man committed suicide shortly thereafter by jumping off a bridge.
For Jimmy Cefalo and Manny Munoz to go out of their way to argue that the word “gay,” even when used despairingly, was ok was dead wrong. Whether you agree with the homosexual lifestyle or not, no group should be mocked. These radio show hosts may believe that these comments are acceptable, but tell that to the countless kids that are made fun of everyday, some who are beaten. Tell that to the parents of the many kids who have taken their own life after being bullied because of the sexual preferences.
Cefalo and Munoz might think it’s funny to call people names and suggest Anderson Cooper overreacted by stating that the flippant use of the word “gay” can lead to pain, but their attitude clearly suggests that they are insensitive to the homosexual community, many who probably listen to their show.
